Shri Omkareshwar

Introduction

The fourth Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Bhagwan Shiva is Omkareshwar. The glory of Omkareshwar is mentioned in ancient scriptures like the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on the northern bank of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, about 77 km from Indore. It is the only Jyotirlinga located along the northern shore of the river. It is believed that after traversing the three worlds daily, Bhagwan Shiva rests here. Therefore, special sleeping arrangements, rituals, and Shayan Darshan of Bhagwan Shiva are arranged here.

Mamleshwar Temple

Mamleshwar Temple is located on the southern bank of the Narmada River. Its actual name is Amreshwar. Devotees visit both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar temples for darshan and worship. The temple is a unique example of ancient architecture. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar used to worship here. The temple is managed by the ‘Ahilyabai Khansgi Trust’.

Omkareshwar Dam

The idea for the Omkareshwar Dam project first arose in 1965, with the goal of providing electricity and irrigation. This concrete dam is 949 meters long and 33 meters high. The dam began operation in 2007. Its reservoir has created beautiful islands. Many tourism projects are being developed around it like Sailani Island and Hanuvantia Resort.

Omkar Parvat Parikrama

In Omkareshwar, devotees perform the parikrama (circumambulation) of Shri Omkareshwar and Mandhata Parvat, carrying Narmada water with the intention of fulfilling their wishes. The parikrama path is approximately 7 kilometers long, and along the way, there are several temples and archaeological monuments that are of significant religious importance.
